Weezer to Tour Performing Only First 2 Albums. Also, Hell Freezes Over

Fans flash the Weezer "W" hand sign at a Weezer concert

Yes, we'll even flash this tool-ish hand sign as long as they promise not to play any of their post 1996 "material."

For people of a certain age, Weezer represents an interesting musical paradox: how can one band be responsible for some of the very best music and so much of the very worst music? If you came of age in the 1990′s you know exactly what we mean. Weezer captured the feeling and youthful angst of disaffected suburbia in a way that none of their contemporaries could. Sure, everyone aspired to be Nirvana, but the genius of Weezer was that everyone already was Weezer. And Weezer was us.

The band took a well-deserved break in 1997 after wrapping up a tour in support of their unfairly maligned sophomore effort, Pinkerton. When they returned with a new album in 2001, and the sucking began. It has continued ever since, with craptastic “hits” like “Beverly Hills” and “Pork and Beans” beginning a tidal wave a suckitude that has recently crested with their 2010 World Cup Team USA “Anthem” and “Memories” the from their upcoming album Hurley.  Thus, in a little over a decade, Weezer went from being one of the greatest working bands to one of the worst.

All of this is why we’re over the moon to hear, via MTV (the mere fact that MTV is the source of this info just goes to show you the depths to which the band has sunk), that Weezer is planning to tour the country doing two-night gigs, with each night dedicated to one of the bands first two albums (the really, really good ones). On the first night, they’ll play their debut album from 1994, Weezer (commonly known as “the Blue Album”). On the next night, they’ll play Pinkerton, which was a flop when released but has since grown into one of the bands most well-loved albums. We’re terrified of what they might be able to charge for tickets to these shows, because with just a few words they’ve turned us from people you couldn’t pay to go to Weezer show into people dying for ticket information. Weezer can’t undo all the ills they’ve foisted upon the listening public since 2001, but they can sure try.
