Like many, I was less than surprised to hear the “news” yesterday of Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian’s pending divorce. All things considered, 72 days is quite a commitment for Kim. Marriages don’t mean quite the same thing as they used to, especially in Hollywood. Be it for money, gifts, publicity, or just plain fun, relationships and their corresponding civil ceremonies come and go. You are lucky, whether you are a celebrity or an everyday citizen, if you can make a relationship last longer than a few years.

Even so, I was both shocked and disappointed to hear of the split between a less famous but infinitely more admirable couple, actress Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard. Gibbard is one of my favorite musicians, both for his work with Death Cab and with his side project, The Postal Service. In addition to being a phenomenal actress, Zooey is also a very talented indie pop musician. Since 2008, she and M. Ward have released two albums under the moniker She & Him, and are slated to release a Christmas album together later this month.
