Slim and Fast: iPad 2 Is Out

iPad 2 available in U.S. March 11th

Apple Inc. set the cyber-world ablaze once again with the announcement of iPad 2. Steve Jobs touted the undeniable success of the first-generation iPad in a press conference just a short time ago. He swiftly segued into the newest product in a breed of high-tech hand held devices that are changing the way we compute.

The new iPad is slimmer than the iPhone 4 and has a dual-core processor. It will operate at twice the speed of its predecessor and move graphics nine times as fast.

Kirk Douglas Makes Academy Awards Appearance

Kirk Douglas appears at 2011 Academy Awards

If you haven’t seen or heard about it yet, 94-year-old veteran actor Kirk Douglas made an appearance at the 2011 Academy Awards Sunday night. His performance prior to the announcement of best supporting actress is something to behold. Check out the video in today’s Washington Post Celebritology section.

Douglas is probably best known for his role in Spartacus, a 1960 film which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best drama. Douglas’ career is speckled with various award nominations for best actor and he even won a Razzie Award for worst actor in the 1980 film Saturn 3.

The 90′s were not so easy on the aged actor. In 1991, he survived a helicopter crash in which two people died, and in 1996, he suffered a stroke which impaired his ability to speak. Tragedy struck again in 2004 with the death of his son, Eric Douglas, who died of a drug overdose.

Despite any reasonable explanation as to why a man of his age and life experience may decline an offer to appear at the Oscars, Douglas took the job anyway. His speech was clearly affected and made it awkward at first, but like any good showman, he pressed on and it was pretty funny.

Avenger Monster Truck Visits Juggle Offices

Team Scream monster truck Avenger

Fridays at the Juggle offices are usually just as busy as any other day, but about a week ago, we all broke early to welcome our long-awaited guests: Team Scream with their truck Avenger and driver Jim Koehler. Juggle jumped at the opportunity to sponsor Avenger, and they thanked us by making a pit stop a day before the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam World Finals in St. Louis.

The wheels measure 66 inches and combined with the chassis, the beast tops 10 feet. Avenger’s engine needs no explanation (see above). However, if you are wondering, it’s an 1,800 horsepower blown 575 Chevrolet Big Block. It was loud, mean and definitely had the capacity to scare small children.

Koehler says the excitement of being in a truck race is unbeatable but dangerous situations are part of it. “We rolled it last week,” said Koehler with a big smile on his face. “You’re not supposed to do that.”

More than 56,000 fans packed into the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday for Monster Jam. Koehler qualified and raced but did not come out on top. Despite his standings, he still went out and did what he said he was going to do: crush cars, kick up dirt and make head-crunching noise.

In return, forward Jeff Green and Nedad Krstic will wear the lucky green, according to Yahoo Sports. The Portland Trail Blazers gave Charlotte two-first-round picks in return for Gerald Wallace.

Finally, the Houston Rockets sent Shane Battier to the Memphis Grizzlies for center Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round-draft pick. Houston also sent Aaron Brooks to the Phoenix Suns for Goran Dragic and another first-round-draft pick.

Utah Jazz Trade Deron Williams to Nets

Deron Williams traded to Nets

In a shocking move, the Utah Jazz have traded point guard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets for rookie forward Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris and first-round picks in both the 2011 and 2012 drafts.

This comes nearly two weeks after long-time coach Jerry Sloan bowed out after 23 seasons. Assistant Phil Johnson stepped down the same day making way for assistant Tyrone Corbin to take over as head coach.

Favors is expected to be in a Utah Jazz uniform in time to play the San Antonio Spurs Friday the 25th.

Amazon Announces Release of Prime Streaming Service

Amazon Prime streaming service to compete with Netflix and others

Online shopping giant Amazon.com unveiled its streaming service today for members of the Amazon Prime mail-order program. Members who currently pay the $79 annual fee can now stream 5000 movies and TV show titles. Amazon has already pushed through negotiations for many Internet televisions and set-top boxes to have access to Prime Instant Videos. However, there is still no way to watch through Apple TV or iOS devices. While much of their streamed content contains older titles, this move signals Amazon’s intentions for becoming a major player in the streaming industry.

Video streaming services have gained significant traction in recent years due to the advent of better Internet service and more versatile home computing technology. Netflix, Apple, Google and Microsoft are already eyeball-deep in a battle over delivering instant content and if Amazon wants to play, they had better be ready to pay.

For example, Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” service as of 2011 holds first-run rights to films from Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lions Gate Entertainment, along with films from Sony Pictures Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures, Overture Films and Anchor Bay Entertainment. Netflix’s back-catalog rights are much the same. Their total subscriber base is roughly 20 million with greater numbers of those taking advantage of instant streaming every month.

From a business standpoint, it may be the perfect time for Amazon to jump in the game. It’s even better for the average stream-savvy consumer. You get more options, prices are reasonable and lets be honest, the technology is amazing.

Dave Duerson Dead at 50

Duerson, found dead in his Miami home

Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson was found dead Thursday night in his Miami, FL home. Duerson was a starter for the Bears when they won the Super Bowl in 1985.

The Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s office has not determined the cause of death. Detectives are awaiting a report from the medical examiner’s office.

“Our family asks that you please remember Dave as a good, kind, and caring man,” Duerson’s ex-wife, Alicia Duerson, said, according to NBCChicago.com. “He loved and cherished his family and friends and was extremely proud of his beloved Notre Dame and Chicago Bears. Please keep Dave and our family in your prayers.”

Duerson produced an All-American career at Notre Dame and was drafted in the third round to play for the Bears in 1983. As part of a dominating defense, Duerson helped the 1985 Bears achieve a 15-1 record with two shutouts in the playoffs. They crushed the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, 46-10. He was part of the 1990 New York Giants team that also won the Super Bowl.

No Deal: Deadline Up for Cardinals and Pujols

Pujols enters final contract year, no deal yet

Three time MLB National League MVP Albert Pujols is closer to free agency following the failure to reach an agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals by the long-set deadline of February 16, 2011. Club leaders in a Jupiter, Florida press conference said that it was a “substantial and long-term offer” which was first presented in January and adjusted many times since.

Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and General Manager John Mozeliak declined to comment on specifics of the initial offer, but according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, sources close to the deal describe figures like $200 million over a nine or 10 year period. Allegedly the Pujols contract has taken many forms and is even said to have included an equity stake in the Cardinals program. Apparently that is not good enough.

Pujols enters his “walk-year” having led the NL in home runs and runs batted in for the 2010 season. He also won his second Golden Glove. Career stats are as follows: .331 batting average, 408 home runs, 1,230 runs batted in and a 1.050 on-base-plus-slugging average. The man is good, but is he worth it?

The first question you have to ask is this: What are other payers getting paid? Philadelphia Phillies‘ first baseman Ryan Howard was awarded a $125 million extension which starts next season. Other players have signed big deals recently as well, marking an inflation of sorts which is likely playing a factor in Pujols’ negotiations with the Cards. Even if Pujols were to accept the offer, while it would be close, it would not be the biggest deal in baseball.

The fact remains. Pujols did not agree to his speculated $200 million/nine-10 year deal. I say to Mr. Pujols, what more do you want? Whatever it is, he will probably get it.
