The televised portion of the Grammys was more like a pop variety show with good guests and great music. Only 10 awards were given out on-air allowing the bulk of time for tribute performances.
Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959)
On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin Holley), Ritchie Valens and JP ” The Big Bopper” Richardson died in a plane crash in Iowa shortly after taking off from Mason City. They had chartered a plane to get to their next venue in Moorhead, Minnesota after a series of tour bus breakdowns. Bad weather is said to be the cause of the crash which killed all three artists and the pilot.
Holly and his band, The Crickets, which included Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, Carl Bunch and others over the years, had just landed a No. 1 hit called “That’ll Be The Day.” As the story goes, Jennings gave up his seat on the plane, to which Holly replied jokingly, “I hope your bus freezes up.” Jennings famously replied, “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes!” That statement would haunt Jennnings for years.
In the song “American Pie,” Don McLean referred to it as “The Day The Music Died.”
Organizers have released the music lineup for the 2011 Coachella music festival, which is held every year in Indio, California.
Coachella opens up the gates on April 15th and starts off with some of the biggest names in indie rock, techno and hip-hop. Two of the bigger names include The Chemical Brothers and Cee Lo Green. Two bands/artists I would personally like to see live who are set to play the first day are Irish rock group Flogging Molly and beatboxer Beardyman. The day is rounded out with headliners Kings of Leon. They’re the ones who left a St. Louis performance early in 2010 because of an alleged onslaught of pigeon poop on-stage.
Coachella is one of a small group of big music festivals across the country. Others include Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and the Vans Warped Tour. Last year, Coachella had an estimated attendance of 75,000 people per day. That’s a big party. I smell a road trip.
Until Amedeo Modigliani's "Woman with a Fan" is recovered, we'll have to make due with this recreation featuring Julianne Moore. Take your time, French police.
Like all art heists, the incident reeks of intrigue. Somehow, three security guards saw and heard nothing. What’s more, the museum’s security system had been broken “for the past few days,” which is just a little too convenient, if you ask us. The good news, if there is any, is that the pieces stolen are far too well-known to be easily sold anywhere, and somehow the black market for art is the one black market where things cost less than they normally do, and the thief/thieves are unlikely to get anything approaching $600 million even if they do manage to sell some of the art. At this point the best the culprits can hope for is that the French National Policesend a foxy cryptologist played by Audrey Tautou after them. Barring that, it’s hard to see how this crime could pay.
