GWAR Guitarist Cory Smoot Found Dead

It’s a tragic day in the heavy metal music world, as it has unexpectedly lost one of its most talented musicians. Cory Smoot, lead guitarist of the notoriously grotesque band GWAR, was mysteriously found dead in the band’s tour bus yesterday morning. GWAR, a Richmond, Virginia-based metal band, have been playing with a rotating line-up since 1985. They are currently on Metal Blade Records, and have released 12 full-length albums to date. Their sci-fi/horror film-inspired costumes and perverse lyrics have made them a staple in the metal world, and their live performances are infamous for their morally and politically taboo themes.

Smoot, whose stage name was “Flattus Maximus,” joined the band in in the early 2000’s. As all members keep a majority of their personal lives secret, no one is sure exactly how old he was when he passed. The cause of his death is also unclear, and funeral arrangements have yet to be made. Lead singer Dave Brockie, otherwise known as “Oderus Urungus,” released a statement saying that “at this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother.” He asked the public for privacy, while the group mourns the loss of “one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.” Smoot’s body was found as the band was getting ready to cross the border into Canada for the second part of their North American tour. They had just performed in St. Louis this past Tuesday.

Endangered Animals Slaughtered After Owner’s Suicide

An almost unprecedented tragedy unraveled this week in a rural town in Ohio when sheriff’s deputies were forced to shoot and kill almost 50 exotic animals. Terry Thompson, 62, owner of Muskingum County Animal Farm, flung open his animals’ cages late last Tuesday before committing suicide. Schools were closed and residents of Zanesville were warned to stay in their homes until Wednesday afternoon, when officers with high-powered rifles and orders to shoot-to-kill had managed to hunt down the 56 animals

Rest in Peace Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage

Randy "Macho Man" Savage

Randy “Macho Man” Savage died this morning, leaving behind a seemingly endless legacy of wrestling moves, Slim Jim commercials and fantastic Halloween costume ideas.

The former wrestler and icon suffered a heart attack while driving with his wife this morning, causing the car to cross the median and run head-on into a tree. His wife, Lynn, to whom he had been married for nearly a year, suffered very minor injuries during the collision.

Savage was best known for his trademark phrase “OOOOHHH YEEEAAAHHHH” during his wrestling heydays. His contemporaries included Hulk Hogan and a host of other wrestlers from the WCW and WWF (now collectively the WWE) of old. He had a brief role as the wrestler “Bonesaw” in the first Spiderman film staring Tobey Maguire, and won the award for “Most Likely To Steal the Show For People Who Like Wrestling More Than Comic Books”, one of the loftier awards in film today.

He was 58. Snapping into a Slim Jim will never be the same again.

Osama Bin Laden, 9/11 Mastermind, Killed By American Forces in Pakistan

Osama Bin Laden

Osama Bin Laden, leader of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, FBI’s Most Wanted, mastermind behind the terrorist attacks of the September 11th attacks, has been killed by American forces within a compound 35 miles north of Islamabad, Pakistan.

The surprise announcement was made in the waning hours of Sunday night, when President Barack Obama scheduled an impromptu, late night press conference in the East Room of the White House, on an undisclosed topic. As speculation began to mount about what had transpired, news outlets began confirming the death of Public Enemy No. 1 before the President made a short address, announcing some of the specifics behind the military action taken, while also calling for the country to be as unified as it had been in the hours following the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the plane crash in Shanksville, Penn.

According to Obama, intelligence had been gathered since the beginning of last fall about the compound in Abbottabad, an affluent suburb of Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. A team of highly trained Navy Seals infiltrated the base, killing five others along with Bin Laden. No Americans were injured in the operation.

As news began to spread on sundry social media outlets, celebrations began to spill out into the streets. Along Pennsylvania Avenue, a large crowd gathered at the gates of the White House, chanting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” and breaking into verses of the Star Spangled Banner. At Ground Zero, the site of the terrorist attacks in New York City, crowds were also embracing one another, celebrating the death of the man who had taken so much from them and the rest of the country nearly a decade ago.

President Obama called President George W. Bush, sitting President during the attacks in 2001, to give him the news personally. As Bush had promised at the rubble in New York City, and Obama declared almost ten years later, “justice has been done.”

Farewell, Blake Edwards

The late director Blake Edwards on set

We'll miss Blake Edwards, both because he gave us the Pink Panther movies and because he made Mary Poppins so happy.

We’re sad to report that film director Blake Edwards has died at age 88.

Known for directing comedies, Edwards famously cast and directed Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther, which of course originated the legendary character of Inspector Clouseau. Edwards also made a few more serious movies including the now-iconic film adaptation of Truman Capote‘s Breakfast at Tiffany’s with Audrey Hepburn.
