‘Swamp People’ Star Mitchell Guist Dies

Mitchell Guist, a Louisiana alligator hunter featured on History’s reality television show “Swamp People,” died Monday, according to a statement by the Louisiana state police.

Mitchell Guist, star of History's "Swamp People," has passed away

Guist, who would have turned 49 on Friday, was pronounced dead at the hospital after falling from his boat on the Intracoastal Waterway near Pierre Part. Reports from deputies in neighboring St. Martin Parish state that Guist was traveling on the waterway around 9 A.M. when he fell. The boat then docked in St. Martin and Guist was taken to a nearby hospital.

The reason for Guist’s fall is as of yet unclear, and there is still no word on the official cause of death. However, 911 tapes released late Monday night reveal that Belle River residents believed the man had suffered a heart attack.

“You say he’s in cardiac arrest?” the dispatcher said.

“Yes, sir, we’re blowing and pumping the guy’s chest right now,” the caller said. “It looks like he may have had a heart attack.”

In a statement released to the public yesterday, History said, “We are extremely saddened to report that our friend and beloved member of the Swamp People family, Mitchell Guist, has passed away. Mitchell passed on the swamp, doing what he loved. We appreciate your respect for the Guist family’s privacy and hope you join us in sending our thoughts and prayers to his brother, Glenn, and the rest of the Guist family.”

“Swamp People” is currently on its third season and airs Thursday nights on the History Channel.

George Lindsey, Andy Griffith Show Character Goober Pyle, Dies at 83

George Lindsey, who gained fame for his role of gas station attendant Goober on both “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Hee Haw,” passed away early Sunday morning after a short-term illness.

Lindsey joined the cast of “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1964 when Jim Nabors, who played the character Gomer Pyle, left the program.

Goober Pyle, who was once mentioned briefly as Gomer’s cousin, took Gomer’s place, making both Lindsey and Goober household names.

Lindsey played Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1964 to 1968 and on its successor, “Mayberry RFD,” from 1968 until 1971. Then, he took Goober’s character to the show “Hee Haw,” which ran from 1971 until 1993.

“America has grown up with me,” Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. “Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol’ Goober.”

In a statement released through the funeral home, Andy Griffith said of his dear friend, “I had great respect for [George’s] talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago…I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, ‘I love you.’ That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. ‘I love you.’”

“Bachelor” Host Chris Harrison and Wife Gwen Announce Split

Chris Harrison, host of TV dating show “The Bachelor,” has announced that he and his wife of 18 years, Gwen Harrison, are separating from one another “after much heartfelt consideration.” Harrison, who has hosted “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” for all 23 of their combined seasons, has two children with Gwen, Joshua, 9, and Taylor, 7. He coaches both kids’ soccer teams and is, according to a 2010 interview with Gwen, “an amazing father. He’s very loving and involved.”

"Bachelor" host Chris Harrison and wife have announced their amicable split

The couple announced their split in a joint statement Thursday, saying, “Though we have made this incredibly difficult decision to separate, our love and mutual respect remain, and we look forward to sharing in the lives of our wonderful children.”

In February 2010, Bachelor contestant Rozlyn Papa called Harrison a cheater, and accused him of making a pass at a producer’s wife during the show’s taping in New Zealand. “I won’t even dignify that with a response,” Harrison said during the “The Bachelor: Women Tell All” special.

Harrison, now 40, met his wife while they were students at Oklahoma City University. A rep confirms that they “happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and mutual admiration for each other.”

The eighth season of “The Bachelorette” premieres on May 14 on ABC, and stars Emily Maynard, bachelor Brad Womack’s ex-fiancé.

Bomb Squad Called to Home of Rush Limbaugh

Thursday evening, a bomb squad was called to the residence of conservative radio and talk show host Rush Limbaugh after security personnel discovered a suspicious package on his Palm Beach property. While X-raying incoming mail (which is standard procedure in the Limbaugh household), security detected what appeared to be wires in one package.

Fearing that the parcel might be dangerous, they called Palm Beach Police, who immediately sent a bomb squad to the house.

Palm Beach Police spokesman Fred Hess said the package appears to not be dangerous or hazardous. According to reports, it was sent from a man in Pennsylvania, who was offering Limbaugh “a business opportunity.” Inside was an “electronic [plaque] commemorating the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth.” The sender has yet to be publicly identified. However, according to officials, he or she apologized for the suspicious packaging and insisted that it was not a bomb.

Stephen Colbert Halts Show for Sick Mother

Earlier this week, Comedy Central abruptly announced the temporary suspension of The Colbert Report.

Colbert has taken a hiatus from his show to be with his ill mother

“Due to unforeseen circumstances,” the network said, “the show will air repeat episodes on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16.” No further information was released, leaving room for many rumors regarding the show’s unexpected and immediate hiatus. Some suspected a labor dispute or possible cancellation. Others assumed it might have something to do with Colbert’s supposed campaign for presidency.

Today, however, the New York Post finally offered some insight on the subject. Citing sources close to the show, the newspaper said host Stephen Colbert needed to take time off to be with his mother, Lorna Colbert, with whom he is extremely close.

Stephen Colbert for President?

Thursday evening, comedian and political pundit Stephen Colbert made an announcement that could potentially be the best news the U.S. has heard in decades. Colbert, host of the Comedy Central satirical news show The Colbert Report, revealed on last night’s show that he is “forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for [his] possible candidacy for President of the United States of South Carolina!”

Stephen Colbert for President!

The announcement comes after a Public Policy Polling survey released on Tuesday found Colbert polling ahead of former Utah governor John Huntsman in Colbert’s home state of South Carolina. According to the survey, Colbert has five percent of the vote, while Huntsman only has four. Discussing the results on his Wednesday show, Colbert said, “This just got real.”

While many people often have trouble determining when Colbert should and should not be taken seriously, it would be a mistake to underestimate his intentions in this instance. In 2008, he attempted to enter the South Carolina Republican primaries to run for president, but could not afford the hefty fee. The Democrats of his state made a decision to block him, ending his campaign aspirations.

Snooki Facing $7 Million Lawsuit

As if anyone is really surprised anymore, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi has made the news yet again for her ridiculous antics. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know Snooki as the pint-sized star of the latest reality phenomenon, “Jersey Shore.” She and her other “guido” and “guidette” roommates make oodles of money drinking, fighting and vacationing in New Jersey courtesy of MTV.

Snooki at her finest

Currently approaching its fifth season, the show has garnered record ratings for the network, making it their most viewed series of all time (which is exceptional considering the “The Real World” craze of the 90’s). While a number of the roommates have difficulty even using proper English (not because of a language barrier, but because of lack of intelligence), both Snooki and fellow guidette “JWoWW” (Jenni Farley) are both “authors” of “books” that have made the LA and New York Times Best Sellers lists. As an English major and an aspiring writer, there is no more depressing of a sign of the times.

Tragedy for the Duggar Family

Last month, Michelle Duggar of the reality show “19 Kids and Counting” made waves when she announced on “The Today Show” that she and her husband Jim Bob were expecting their 20th child. Despite the public’s apprehension at their unbelievably large and continuously growing family, the Duggars and their 19 children could not wait for the latest addition.

In a tragic turn of events, however, the family released a statement Thursday declaring that Michelle has suffered a miscarriage. “We had just been talking about baby names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or girl. It has been a real sad disappointment,” she told People magazine.

Maher and Hasselbeck Face Off in a Battle of (No) Wits

My feminist knickers are in quite a remarkable twist today after hearing of an exchange between two of my least favorite woman-haters of all time. Bill Maher, the notorious liberal, loud-mouth comedian, made an appearance yesterday on the all-female talk show “The View.” Maher is making the media rounds promoting his new book, ironically yet somehow appropriately titled, The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody but Me Has Their Head up Their Ass. During his visit, host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the equally woman-hating yet ultra-conservative former “Survivor” star, called Maher out for comments he made about trading her to Egypt after his last appearance on the show. Needless to say, Maher showed little remorse.

During the interview, the left-wing political commentator also criticized the Republican Presidential candidates, apparently irritating the right-wing Hasselbeck. “Wow,” she said, “I actually feel smarter sitting next to you.” (I can imagine that’s a new feeling for her.) Maher didn’t back down, retorting, “Really? I feel like I’m in high school sitting next to you.” Oh, the public bickering of two ignorant grown adults!

Duggar Family Keeps Counting

The infamous Duggar family, from the TLC reality series “19 Kids and Counting,” made a big announcement yesterday morning on The Today Show. Parents Jim Bob and Michelle, along with all 19 of their children and their two grandchildren, visited the set Tuesday to reveal to America that they are expecting child number 20.

All 25 Duggars (including Jim Bob and Michelle, their grandchildren, daughter-in-law and the baby on the way), spend a significant amount of time in the family home. They reside in the small town of Tonitown, Arkansas, in a debt-free house they built themselves. In that home, they both school their children and hold non-denominational Christian worship services.
